Authorities Respond to Leopard Threat, Schools Shut Down in Gamharia

In response to the recent leopard sighting near the industrial area of Gamharia, officials have heightened security measures and issued a public advisory to ensure community safety. The presence of a leopard within the vicinity of RSB Unit #1 Company premises last Sunday prompted the Forest Department to initiate a rescue operation. This wildlife concern has led to the temporary closure of Kerala Public School and Vani Vidya Mandir School in the Gamharia Block, impacting educational activities and local businesses.

JAMSHEDPUR – In the wake of a leopard sighting in Gamharia, Seraikela, local schools have temporarily halted operations to safeguard students.

The Forest Department has been actively working on a rescue plan since the animal was spotted on the company grounds of RSB Unit #1 last Sunday.

In an effort to protect residents and workers, the Forest Divisional Officer Aditya Narayan has advised against nocturnal outdoor activities.

People are encouraged to travel in groups or use cars during the night for increased safety.

The department has disseminated emergency contact numbers for immediate assistance concerning the leopard.

Ramesh Hansda of the Bharatiya Janata Party criticized the slow response of authorities, emphasizing the impact on the community’s sense of security.

Hansda has called for the leopard’s relocation to mitigate fear among Gamharia’s residents and facilitate the resumption of normal activities.

Parents were compelled to retrieve their children from school after reports emerged of the leopard’s presence.

The closure of the schools reflects the broader disruptions caused by the animal, affecting education and the economy.

An official remarked, "Ensuring the safety of our children is paramount, leading to the difficult decision to close the schools temporarily."

Another community member stated, "This situation has left us all on edge; quick action is necessary for our peace of mind."
