Homage Paid to Five Employees Gunned Down by Mounted Police
Tata Workers’ Union observed ‘Martyrs Day’ on Friday, March 15, in memory of five employees who lost their lives when mounted police fired indiscriminately on protesting workers of TISCO (later Tata Steel) on the same day in 1920.
JAMSHEDPUR – TWU office-bearers and members paid homage to the five workers who had lost their lives in a firing incident way back in 1920 as a result of an industrial strife.
According to union sources, the five martyred employees were Liladhar Chaubey, Raghunath Bhuinya, Damru Lohar, Seva Singh, and Kalun Mata.
Members of the executive committee, including Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary (President), Shailesh Kumar Singh (Deputy President), Shahnawaz Alam (Vice President), Sanjay Kumar Singh (Vice President), Sanjeev Tiwary (Vice President), Rajiv Kumar Choudhary (Vice President), Ajay Kumar Chaudhury (Assist. Secretary), Shaym Babu (Asst. Secretary), Amod Dubey (Treasurer & Accountant), Jaideo Upadhyay (Director – MJC), and a large number of Union staff, gathered to pay floral tributes to the portrait of the five martyred employees in the Union premises.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on March 15, 1920, when mounted police opened fire on protesting TISCO workers, resulting in the loss of five lives.
The observance of ‘Martyrs Day‘ serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these employees and the struggles faced by workers in their fight for rights and justice.
