MGM Hospital workers face violence over a wheelchair dispute. Five of the patient’s relatives have been detained.

JAMSHEDPUR – Late Friday night at MGM Hospital, two hospital workers were attacked by a patient’s relatives over a disagreement concerning a wheelchair.

The patient’s family also assaulted a home guard who attempted to intervene. Following the incident, other Home Guard jawans apprehended five relatives involved in the attack and handed them over to Sakchi police.

The workers subsequently met with Deputy Superintendent Dr. NP Chowdhary on Saturday morning to discuss the need for enhanced security while on duty.

Staff leaders Amarnath Singh, Joni Mukhi, and Jospin Ekka expressed that despite their dedicated service to patients, they often face abuse and physical harm from relatives of patients.

The dispute erupted when the family of a female patient, whose health had deteriorated, refused to return a wheelchair they had borrowed from the emergency department.

Despite the pleas of the hospital staff who wanted to use the wheelchair to move other patients, the relatives held onto the wheelchair, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence.

However, following the incident, the family members of the patient who had been detained apologized to the hospital staff.

They were later released after posting a bond at the police station.

In the aftermath of the incident, the hospital staff are working in fear. In response to their concerns, Deputy Superintendent Dr. NP Chowdhary assured the employees of their safety, stating that the hospital management guaranteed it.

He also noted that Home Guard jawans have received instructions regarding security.
