Jamshedpur: The advocates of Jamshedpur court have gone on a flash pen-down strike to protest the police action against an advocate Chandan Chaturvedi in connection with Kadma Shashtri Nagar communal violence case.

The advocates alleged that Chandan Chaturvedi had just gone from court to the SSP office to submit a memorandum. However, they alleged, he was taken into custody and after detaining him for 24 hours was brought to the court in handcuffs and then sent to judicial custody.

Jamshedpur advocates demand immediate release of fellow advocate Chandan Chaturvedi.

The agitating legal fraternity strongly objected to the ‘handcuffing’ and said that it was clear violation of Supreme Court’s directive and a case of ‘contempt of court’.

Advocate Chandan Chaturvedi brought to court on Tuesday after his arrest.

The advocates said that their agitation would continue till Chandan Chaturvedi is released unconditionally and action is taken against the police officers responsible for his arrest.

The advocates said that they will decide on the next course of action after their meeting.

The legal community in Jamshedpur is up in arms against the district police following the recent actions of the local police, which they termed as ‘roughshod’..

On Wednesday, advocates went on a flash pen-down strike in protest, and created a ruckus at the Jamshedpur Civil Court premises, effectively bringing judicial work to a halt.

The trigger for this action was the arrest of advocate Chandan Chaturvedi, who had allegedly gone to meet with the SSP along with some other individuals to submit a memorandum in connection with the recent Kadma violence.

However, advocates said, after the memorandum was submitted to the SSP, Chaturvedi was taken into custody and brought to the court in handcuffs, before being sent to judicial custody.

This move by the police has been met with widespread condemnation from advocates in the city, who have now opened a front against the police administration.

They are demanding the immediate release of Chaturvedi, and have made it clear that their movement will not cease until their demands are met.

Jamshedpur Advocates shout slogans against arrest of fellow advocate.

Many advocates have criticized the police for what they see as a contempt of the Supreme Court order, and have urged the authorities to take swift action to rectify the situation.

The Kadma Shashtri Nagar violence and the subsequent strict police action has drawn criticism from various quarters, and the arrest of Chaturvedi has only added fuel to the fire.
