Tata Steel Sports Division hosts National Archery Trials for Tokyo 2021 Olympics

8 archers will be selected from the trials at Jamshedpur in addition to 16 already selected by Archery Association of India

In the past 11 archers from Tata Archery Academy have represented India in the Olympics

Jamshedpur: The Sports Division of Tata Steel is hosting the National Archery Trials organised by Archery Association of India (AAI) to identify 8 prospects for the Tokyo Olympics to be held in 2021.   The selected archers comprising four men and four women archers will be in addition to the 16 archers (8 men and 8 women) already selected by AAI, taking the total pool for prospects to 24.

The latest trials are being held in Jamshedpur between November 23 to 27, 2020, at JRD Tata Sports Complex. The AAI will be deputing 10 officials to supervise and conduct the trials.

The AAI had earlier shortlisted 8 men and 8 women archers who are already in the national camp at Pune for their final preparations.   The final archery team of 6 (3 men and 3 women) will be selected from this pool of 24 archers to represent India in Tokyo.

The AAI had decided to conduct a second round of trials to further identify the high performing archers who are in their peak performance cycle which is critical to map individual performance for the Olympics representation.

Since its inception in 1996, Tata Archery Academy (TAA) has sent 11 archers to represent India in the Olympics.  The Academy has also had the honour of hosting several such trials in the past including trials for the 2016 Olympics, the Asian Championship 2017 and the 1st stage of Asian Games in 2018.

The trial hosted by TAA is the first national level sporting event to be hosted in Jamshedpur since national lockdown was announced in March 2020 due to COVID-19.
