JAMSHEDPUR – Former MP Shailendra Mahto on Thursday questioned the working style of the state government and police administration, saying the entire state police force appeared focused on pursuing a single MLA, which he termed unfair to the democratic system.

Speaking to reporters at his residential office, Mahto said the silence of the Jharkhand chief minister and the assembly speaker over the matter was a cause for concern. He argued that the issue was not limited to one individual but concerned the balance of power between the state’s legislature and executive.

However, he warned that failing to take timely and appropriate steps could have far-reaching consequences for the state.

The Jamshedpur-based former MP said the Jharkhand Police Association would decide its future strategy between September 8 and 10. Meanwhile, he expressed apprehension that if the matter escalates into an agitation, its impact could be felt across the state.

“A confrontation between democratic institutions does not serve any state’s interest,” Mahto said, urging the government to resolve the matter through dialogue and sensitivity.

In addition, he called on the state government to hear all sides and take a positive approach rather than allowing the standoff to continue. Mahto said he hoped the government would intervene in time to normalise the situation.

The controversy stems from the ongoing standoff between the Jharkhand Police Association and MLA Jairam Mahto, who has so far refused to apologise despite the association’s demands. Besides the ultimatum, the case has also seen no interim relief on anticipatory bail for the MLA so far.

Moreover, following Mahto’s remarks, discussions around the issue have intensified within the state’s political circles.
