Association Threatens Statewide Agitation Over Alleged Threat to Police Officer

RANCHI – The Jharkhand Police Association has issued an ultimatum demanding the arrest of Dumri MLA and JLKM central president Jairam Mahto within five days. The association has warned that policemen across the state will launch an agitation if the arrest and necessary action are not carried out within this period.
The controversy stems from an alleged incident in which MLA Jairam Mahto is accused of abusing and threatening Ravi Kumar, the in-charge of Barwaadda police station in Dhanbad, over a phone call. The matter has since gained considerable traction.
Association state president Rahul Kumar Murmu said in Ranchi on Wednesday that police officials and personnel across the state would be compelled to launch an agitation if arrest and action against the MLA do not follow within five days. The association has demanded immediate action from the government and police administration in the matter. It further said that all branch officials and members would collectively join the agitation if the arrests of the MLA and other accused are not ensured within the stipulated period.
According to the allegation, MLA Jairam Mahto called Ravi Kumar on the night of August 21 and allegedly threatened him. He reportedly warned that even after his transfer, the officer’s career would be ruined wherever he was posted in the state.
Meanwhile, the Police Association said an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident at Barwaadda police station, case number 146/26, dated August 22, 2026. The case has been filed under sections 221, 224, 132, 351(2), 352 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Around 10 people, including MLA Jairam Mahto, have been named as accused in the case. The association said the expected action in the matter has not yet been taken. It described protecting the honour and dignity of police officials and personnel as its responsibility and demanded swift action against the accused.
The association has also objected to what it described as continued statements against policemen by Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto through social media and other channels. It said this was harming the honour and dignity of police officials and employees. “Police officials and personnel across the state will be compelled to launch an agitation if arrest and action are not ensured within five days,” Murmu said.
