JAMSHEDPUR – A young man was allegedly attacked by a group of 25 to 30 people in the Uliidih police station area on Monday evening, triggering panic in the locality.
The injured man, identified as Rahul Sharma, was rushed to MGM Hospital by his friends and is currently undergoing treatment there. His family has levelled serious allegations against several youths in connection with the incident.
According to Rahul’s mother, he had left home on Monday evening when she received information that he had been assaulted. She alleged that around 25 to 30 youths, with their faces covered and wearing helmets, arrived at the spot and surrounded him.
The attackers allegedly used rods, hockey sticks and other weapon-like objects to assault him. Family members further claimed that shots were fired during the attack, though this allegation has not yet been officially confirmed.
Rahul’s mother said the bullet was fired into the air and did not hit him. However, she said the attackers continued to beat him mercilessly after the alleged firing.
Rahul sustained severe injuries to his hands, legs, waist and face in the assault. His family said he required stitches at multiple places on his body and bears deep marks from the attack.
His mother also alleged that some youths had approached their house around three months ago and issued threats concerning Rahul. She said the matter was not pursued further at the time, as the family was preparing for a wedding.
The family has named Siddhesh Singh, Sonu Gupta, Deepak Mishra and Chandan Singh, among others, as being involved in the attack. Police, however, have not yet confirmed the involvement of any individual in the case.
Uliidih police are currently investigating the matter. The exact cause of the attack, the identity of the accused and the veracity of the firing claim are expected to become clear only after the police probe concludes.
The Jamshedpur incident adds to a string of recent violent crimes in the district, including a case where a youth injured himself while attempting an attack in Govindpur. Meanwhile, MGM Hospital, where Rahul is being treated, was separately in the news recently after security personnel caught a youth attempting a theft on its premises.
Besides such incidents, the district has recently seen other cases of group violence, including road-related unrest in the wider region and a theft gang bust by Jamshedpur police. However, police say a clearer picture of Monday’s attack will emerge only once the investigation progresses.
