Key Points:
- Vishwanath Mandal alias Bodra surrenders after evading police for months
- East Singhbhum police had announced Rs 2 lakh reward for his arrest
- Accused faces serious BNS charges in Bistupur case number 84/2026
JAMSHEDPUR – An absconding accused who carried a bounty of Rs 2 lakh from East Singhbhum police surrendered before the CGM court at the Jamshedpur civil court on Wednesday, marking a significant turn in one of the district’s closely watched cases.
The accused, Vishwanath Mandal, also known as Bodra, had remained out of police reach for an extended period. His surrender is being seen as an important development given how long he had evaded arrest.
Mandal is the main accused in Bistupur police station case number 84/2026. He faces charges under several serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to police, the accused had been on the run for a considerable time, and repeated raids failed to bring about his arrest. It was this prolonged evasion that led East Singhbhum police to announce a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh for information leading to his capture.
A special team had been formed by police specifically to track down the accused. The office of the senior superintendent of police had also appealed to the general public for any information regarding his whereabouts, assuring that the identity of anyone providing such information would be kept strictly confidential. Despite these measures, the accused continued to elude police for months.
On Wednesday, rather than face police action, Mandal chose to walk directly into the Jamshedpur civil CGM court and surrender. Following his surrender, legal proceedings were initiated to send him to judicial custody. The case will now proceed through further hearings in court, and police may seek permission to take the accused on remand for questioning if required.
Officials said Mandal’s surrender is expected to give fresh direction to the investigation into the case. Police added that other aspects connected to the matter remain under examination, and further legal action will be taken as necessary.
The surrender comes against a backdrop of other high-profile fugitive cases in the district. Police had earlier recovered a vehicle linked to a banned PLFI leader who had evaded capture for years. In a similar vein, a PLFI area commander was arrested in Bandgaon after a prolonged search, while a separate case saw a Maoist cadre apprehended in Chaibasa’s Sonua area. Bistupur has also seen other significant law-and-order developments recently, including the arrest of a BJP leader in connection with the murder of Karni Sena chief Himanshu Singh, and past cases involving a rescued captive in the same locality.
