Key Points:

JAMSHEDPUR – A monthlong, statewide awareness campaign against the abuse of narcotics concluded in Jamshedpur on Saturday with a human chain and an awareness rally. District officials, government staff, students, members of voluntary organisations, and ordinary citizens took part in large numbers.
The closing event began at the deputy commissioner’s office and proceeded up to Sakchi Golchakkar. Organisers said the turnout reflected the scale of public engagement built up over the course of the drive.
The statewide campaign against the drug menace ran from June 10 to June 26 this year. It covered every district of Jharkhand during that period.
During the three weeks of the drive, schools, colleges, panchayats, and urban localities across the district hosted a mix of rallies, pledge ceremonies, street plays, and seminars. Authorities used these public awareness workshops to reach young people and the wider community with information on the harmful effects of substance abuse. Organisers also used the events to push a broader message about building a drug-free society.
At Saturday’s closing event, participants in the human chain pledged to stay away from narcotics. They also vowed to spread awareness about the issue among others in their communities.
During the rally, demonstrators carried placards and banners bearing anti-drug messages. They used these to reach passersby along the route between the DC office and Sakchi.
District administration officials addressed the gathering during the event. They said that curbing the supply and use of narcotics cannot be achieved through law enforcement measures alone.
A senior official said active participation from society is equally necessary in the fight against drug abuse. The administration has previously carried out enforcement action against the illegal liquor and narcotics trade in the district, including an excise department raid that seized hundreds of litres of illicit liquor from sites across the city, and the busting of a hooch factory in a neighbourhood of the city.
Officials at the closing ceremony appealed directly to young people. They urged the youth to stay away from intoxicants and instead engage with education, sports, and other constructive activities.
Moreover, the administration indicated that civic bodies such as the JNAC have supported similar public outreach exercises in the past. Such bodies are expected to continue backing future awareness drives in the city.
At the conclusion of the programme, all participants repeated their commitment to working together toward a drug-free Jharkhand and a healthier society. The district administration said similar public awareness programmes would continue to be organised in the future to keep the threat of drug abuse in check.
