Jamshedpur West MLA Alleges Mining Continues Under Police-Administration’s Nose Despite Complaints

JAMSHEDPUR – Saryu Roy, the sitting MLA from Jamshedpur West, on Sunday raised a sharp public complaint about rampant illegal coal mining in the Jamuniya river in Baghmara, Dhanbad.
Roy shared on the social media platform X a photograph originally posted by @Jharkhanddastak. The image purportedly showed illegal mining activity taking place in the Jamuniya river.
In his post, Roy alleged that unlawful extraction of coal was going on freely in rivers, streams and abandoned underground mines across Dhanbad district. Moreover, he alleged this was happening right under the nose of the police and the district administration.
“Even after informing the administration, no action is taken,” Roy said in his social media post.
The Jamshedpur West MLA also tagged Chief Minister Hemant Soren directly in the post, drawing the Chief Minister’s attention to the alleged failure of local authorities to act on the complaints.
Illegal coal mining in Dhanbad‘s rivers and abandoned mines has been a long-standing problem in the region. In addition, such mining poses serious risks to riverine ecology, public safety and local groundwater sources.
Roy has in the past also raised issues of environmental damage and administrative inaction in Jharkhand. However, this is among his more direct complaints, given that he has publicly tagged the Chief Minister demanding accountability.
The post has drawn attention to the broader issue of illegal mining that persists in several coal-belt districts of Jharkhand, despite repeated assurances of crackdowns by the state government.
