DHANBAD – Police in Baliapur arrested two men carrying approximately 16 kilograms of cannabis on Monday, in a crackdown on drug trafficking in the area. The seizure was made near Rakhitpur railway gumti.
Dhanbad City SP Ritwik Srivastava said a police team led by Baliapur station in-charge Satyajit Kumar had been conducting patrolling and raids on the night of June 29. During the operation, the team received a tip that two individuals were moving suspiciously near the railway crossing.
After receiving the information, police informed senior officers and launched their operation. The team proceeded toward the Hanuman temple near Pargha on the Baliapur-Jharia main road.
There, officers spotted two men walking on foot toward Kusmatand, each carrying a bag on his back. When stopped and questioned, the two admitted that their bags contained cannabis.
Subdivisional Police Officer of Sindri, Prakash Chand Mahto, was present when the bags were searched. The search uncovered a total of 16 kilograms of cannabis, split across eight packets in each bag.
The arrested men have been identified as Vikas Kumar, a resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, and Shyama Kant Singh, a resident of Sindri in Dhanbad. Police said both had been moving the contraband on foot at the time of their arrest.
Officers have begun further legal proceedings against the two accused. The raid involved police personnel from Baliapur station along with armed force personnel.
The arrest comes amid a wider pattern of anti-drug enforcement across Jharkhand in recent weeks, with seizures reported in multiple districts. Separately, a cannabis smuggler was arrested earlier this month in Amda, Seraikela, with a bike seized in that case.
