Jamshedpur, Jharkhand brace for weather shift as heatwave eases, rain arrives from May 28
Jamshedpur and Jharkhand cities see temperatures drop and rain set in as extreme heat begins to give way to storms and pre-monsoon activity.
JAMSHEDPUR – Temperatures in Jamshedpur are set to fall sharply over the next 48 hours, with rain replacing the intense heat that has gripped the city and the wider Kolhan region through much of May.
After recording highs of 43°C earlier this week, the city is forecast to see the mercury dip to 32°C on May 28, accompanied by rain conditions and humidity climbing to 55%.
The temperature is expected to ease further to 31°C on May 29, with rain continuing and humidity at 51%.
Patchy rain is forecast to persist through May 30 and May 31, with temperatures settling around 33°C.
Jharkhand City-by-City Temperatures and Conditions
The shift follows days of extreme heat across Jharkhand, with multiple cities recording temperatures well above 40°C in the days leading up to May 28.
Bokaro recorded 42.6°C, Chaibasa reached 42°C, Daltonganj touched 45°C, and Ranchi logged 39.8°C in recent days.
The Namkum station in Ranchi recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 22.2°C during the same period.
Jamshedpur recorded the state’s lowest visibility at 2,000 metres amid the heat haze conditions.

Heatwave conditions remained active in Garhwa and Palamu as recently as May 27, with these northwestern districts among the last to receive relief.
Thunderstorms and Western Disturbance Bring Relief
Thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty wind alerts have been active across Jharkhand’s northeastern and central districts, covering Dhanbad, Bokaro, Giridih, Hazaribagh, and Koderma, with winds reaching 50–60 kmph.
Similar activity with winds of 40–50 kmph has been forecast for Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, and Ramgarh.
A western disturbance approaching from Central Asia is bringing the change in weather across north and central India, with the system expected to trigger dust storms and thunderstorms over multiple states between May 29 and May 30.
The disturbance is also generating easterly wind interaction that is pulling moisture into Jharkhand’s weather system.
Wind speeds in Jamshedpur are forecast at 10–15 kmph from the southeast on May 28 and 29, shifting to east-southeast as moisture levels build.

Monsoon Progress and Outlook
The southwest monsoon has been advancing steadily across the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, though it missed its earlier projected onset date of May 26 over Kerala.
The monsoon has covered parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep area, and sections of the Bay of Bengal as of May 27.
Conditions are described as favourable for further advance into the west-central and north Bay of Bengal over the next two to three days.
The monsoon’s current revised window for onset over Kerala is between May 28 and June 3.
Heavy rainfall is simultaneously active across parts of southern India and northeastern states, consistent with the monsoon’s northward push.
Jharkhand typically receives the southwest monsoon in mid-to-late June, with the normal onset over Jamshedpur and East Singhbhum falling around the second week of June.
The ongoing pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity across Singhbhum, Kolhan, and central Jharkhand districts is part of the seasonal transition pattern ahead of the monsoon’s arrival in the state.
