Kudmi Community to Boycott Ghatshila Bypoll Over Unmet Demands

Kudmi Leaders Warn Centre and State to Act Within 15 Days or Face Boycott

Key Points:

  • Kudmi community threatens vote boycott in Ghatshila by-election
  • Demands include ST status, Kudmali language in 8th Schedule, Sarna code
  • Meeting in Galudih calls for unity across 105 polling booths

JAMSHEDPUR – The Kudmi community has announced a boycott of the upcoming Ghatshila Assembly by-election if its long-pending demands are not fulfilled within 15 days by the Centre and the Jharkhand government.

The declaration came during a major assembly-level meeting in Galudih, where community leaders and members unanimously agreed to abstain from voting. The society claimed that despite voting for 75 years in line with the Indian Constitution, successive governments have consistently ignored their constitutional rights.

According to participants, the community has repeatedly protested through the “Rail Teka Andolan” in 2022, 2023, and 2025, yet neither the Centre nor the state has taken any concrete step. They accused both governments of misleading the community with hollow assurances and delaying tactics.

Activist Amit Mahato stated, “If the government fails to initiate official procedures to grant ST status to Kudmis, include Kudmali language in the Eighth Schedule, and recognize the Sarna religion code within ten days, we will enforce a complete poll boycott.”

The community plans to abstain from voting across 105 Mahato-dominated booths, affecting an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 voters. Meanwhile, leaders have begun discussions with elders and local heads to make the boycott movement historic.

Among those present were activists Amit Mahato, social worker Manik Mahato, and members Aditya Kumar, Manoj Mahato, Deepak Mahato, Khokhan Mahato, Khudiram Mahato, Vishwanath Mahato, Dinbandhu Mahato, and Rakhori Mahato.
