Tata Steel Deploys Women in All Shifts at Kalinganagar Plant

Outbound Logistics Sees 18 Women Inducted After Rigorous Training

Key Points:

  • Women deployed in all three shifts at Kalinganagar logistics
  • Move follows India’s first all-women mining shift at Noamundi
  • Tata Steel celebrates 10 years of its MOSAIC DEI programme

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has deployed women employees across all three shifts in the outbound logistics department at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha. This marked another milestone in its efforts to increase gender equity in industrial roles traditionally dominated by men.

In January 2025, the plant welcomed 39 trade apprentices from the 2023 batch. Among them, 26 were women, and 18 joined the outbound logistics department. They received intensive training covering safety, quality, dispatch systems, inventory handling, and digital tools. The onboarding included classroom sessions and on-the-job field training.

Karamveer Singh, General Manager Operations at Tata Steel Kalinganagar, described the wider deployment of women as a step towards greater inclusivity. “The broader induction of women in mining, logistics, and all shifts is reshaping the workplace. Technological advances are creating opportunities, and women are increasingly embracing them,” he said.

Tata Steel has been leading such initiatives for years. In September 2019, it became the first company in India to post women mining engineers in all shifts at its Noamundi mine. In December 2024, the company launched India’s first all-women mining shift at the same mine.

Further, under the “Flames of Change” programme, Tata Steel inducted women firefighter trainees, forming the first all-women firefighting crew in the steel sector. These steps build upon earlier initiatives like “Women@Mines” and “Tejaswini.”

This year, Tata Steel is also marking the tenth anniversary of MOSAIC, its flagship diversity, equity, and inclusion programme, which continues to drive such changes across operations.
