JAMSHEDPUR – Panic gripped Ramnagar Road No. 1 in Ulidih on Friday after locals saw a woman’s body drifting in the Swarnarekha River.
Police arrived promptly, recovered the body and sent it for postmortem. On Saturday, the victim was identified as M. Pandey, a 16-year-old resident of Kaivalya Basti in Golmuri.
She was the daughter of S. Kumar Pandey, employed under a Tata Steel contractor, and a Class 10 student at Kashi D High School. According to family members, she left home on the morning of August 7 for school but never returned.
When she failed to come back by evening, relatives searched nearby areas and contacted acquaintances, but found no trace. Her father then lodged a missing complaint at Golmuri police station.
Search efforts continued until Saturday, when her family received word that the recovered body was hers. The confirmation left the family devastated and the neighbourhood in shock and anger.
Police said they are investigating from multiple angles and will know the exact cause of death after the postmortem report is received.
