MLA Saryu Roy Seeks Free Water Connections for Poor in Jamshedpur West

Saryu Roy writes to DC seeking meeting to discuss affordable water supply

Key Points:

  • Water connection fees of Rs 13,000-25,000 unaffordable for poor residents
  • MLA cites 2005 Tata lease agreement mandating basic amenities provision
  • Suggests applying BPL criteria used in other government welfare schemes

JAMSHEDPUR – Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has urged the Deputy Commissioner to convene a meeting to ensure affordable water supply for economically weaker sections.

The legislator highlighted the plight of daily wage workers in local settlements. Many homes remain unconnected due to high connection charges.

“The current fees are beyond the means of poor residents,” said a community representative.

Moreover, Roy referenced the 2005 Tata lease renewal agreement in his letter. Meanwhile, he emphasized JUSCO’s obligation to provide infrastructure.

Infrastructure Obligations

Furthermore, the agreement requires Tata Steel UISL to charge rates similar to municipal corporations. The state government offers free connections to BPL families.

In addition, families earning below Rs 70,000 annually qualify for various government schemes. This criterion could be applied for water connections.

Administrative Oversight

On the other hand, Roy requested the DC to exercise regulatory authority. The lease agreement lacks clarity on the controlling officer.

Besides, the MLA suggested including JNAC Deputy Municipal Commissioner and Tata Steel UISL GM in discussions. The meeting aims to benefit residents of Kadma, Sonari, and Bistupur areas.
