Raghubar Das Resigns as Odisha Governor Amid BJP Return Buzz

Ex-CM’s Exit from Raj Bhavan Fuels Speculation of Political Comeback

Key Points:

  • Das steps down as Odisha Governor, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati to take charge
  • BJP’s tribal support base erodes with just one win in 28 ST-reserved seats
  • Daughter-in-law Purnima Sahu clinches victory in Jamshedpur East

JAMSHEDPUR – Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das has resigned as Odisha Governor amid growing speculation of his return to state politics.

President Draupadi Murmu has accepted Das’s resignation. Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati will succeed him as the new Governor.

“The timing suggests strategic preparations for the 2025 assembly polls,” a political observer noted.

Meanwhile, Das’s departure comes during a challenging period for BJP in Jharkhand. The party secured only 21 seats in recent elections.

Party’s Tribal Base

The BJP’s tribal support has witnessed a dramatic decline. They won just one ST-reserved seat in 2024.

Moreover, the party’s performance contrasts sharply with its 2014 position. Back then, it held 11 tribal-reserved constituencies.

Electoral Landscape

In contrast, the JMM-led alliance dominated tribal segments. They captured 27 out of 28 reserved seats.

However, Purnima Sahu emerged victorious in Jamshedpur East. She maintained the family’s political legacy in the constituency.

Political Future

On the other hand, Das brings significant experience to the table. He served as Jharkhand’s CM from 2014 to 2019.

Furthermore, he holds the distinction of being the first non-tribal CM. He completed a full term in office.
