MEDININAGAR – Police discovered and destroyed illegal opium cultivation being carried out by Bihar-based smugglers through sharecropping arrangements in Palamu district.
A police team led by Harihargunj Station Officer Chandan Kumar conducted the raid. The operation revealed shocking details about illegal cultivation practices.
Meanwhile, this marks the first instance of opium cultivation on leased farmland since 2022. Moreover, the land was leased from local residents.
Novel Criminal Approach
Traditional sharecropping typically involves crops like paddy, wheat, and pigeon peas. However, criminals have now adapted this system for illegal opium cultivation.
“This is an alarming new trend in agricultural crime,” stated a senior police official. Furthermore, the smugglers specifically targeted remote areas for their operations.
Investigation Details
The police have identified the main suspects from Dumaria, Bihar. Additionally, they were assisted by local facilitators in acquiring the farmland.
On the other hand, authorities have filed an FIR against four individuals. These include local resident Neeraj and Bihar natives Sanjay Paswan and Girja Paswan.
Ongoing Operations
The anti-narcotics operation is part of a larger statewide crackdown. Moreover, police are conducting raids to arrest the accused persons.
