MLA Saryu Roy Blames Former Minister for Mango’s Garbage Crisis

JAMSHEDPUR – Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy criticized former Health Minister Banna Gupta, accusing him of avoiding responsibility regarding Mango Municipal Corporation’s garbage disposal issue. In a press statement on December 19, 2024, Roy stated that Gupta is misleading the public and using the matter for political mileage by writing a letter to the Chief Minister.
Allegations of Obstruction and Neglect
Saryu Roy highlighted that, following the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) May 2023 directive, garbage dumping was prohibited in Sonari’s residential areas. As a result, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) began disposing of waste at Tata Steel’s Sidgora-based Bara Complex.
Roy argued that if Banna Gupta had acted responsibly during his ministerial tenure, Mango’s waste could have also been managed at the same location. However, Roy alleged Gupta prioritized personal gains from Tata Steel rather than addressing Mango’s garbage crisis.
Efforts for a Solution
Roy explained that Mango, Jugsalai, and Adityapur municipalities were assigned to Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) as the nodal agency for waste disposal. Discussions with the Deputy Commissioners of East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan resulted in a temporary agreement to allow Mango’s garbage to be dumped at the Adityapur site, where Adityapur’s waste is already managed.
However, Roy accused Banna Gupta and his associates of creating obstacles, stating, “For two days, Mango’s garbage was dumped at the designated site, but disruptions occurred due to Gupta’s interference.”
Criticism of Political Maneuvering
Roy criticized Gupta’s recent letter to the Chief Minister, calling it an attempt to gather publicity, especially when the Chief Minister is away for religious commitments. Roy stressed that the issue could be resolved at the municipal and district administration levels without escalating it to the Chief Minister.
Accountability and Public Apology
Blaming Gupta for failing to implement the NGT order for over 18 months, Roy said, “Banna Gupta is responsible for the failure to identify a permanent solution for Mango’s garbage disposal. Instead of misleading the public, he should apologize to the residents of Mango.”
Roy concluded by reaffirming his efforts to resolve the crisis in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring that Mango and Jugsalai’s garbage disposal aligns with Adityapur’s nodal system.
