JAMSHEDPUR – A herd of eight wild elephants crossed triple railway tracks near Sunsuniya forest in Chakulia block early Tuesday, adding to villagers’ concerns amid an ongoing tiger scare.
The pachyderms were spotted crossing the third line, up line and down line around 6:30 AM. The gateman, Kaushik Mahato, witnessed the herd moving from north to south.
Railway Safety Measures
Railways typically reduce train speeds in elephant corridors. “We immediately alert the control room when elephants are spotted near tracks,” said a railway official.
Growing Wildlife Concerns
The elephant movement has heightened anxiety in Kaliyam, Jamua and Bhatkunda panchayats. “The situation is becoming difficult with both tigers and elephants in the area,” remarked a local resident.
Historical Context
The Sunsuniya forest region has been a traditional elephant corridor. A forest department official noted, “This area witnesses regular elephant movement, especially during harvest seasons.”
