SARAIKELA – Veteran Jharkhand leader Varun Chakravarty lost his life in a tragic train accident near Kandra.

The incident occurred Sunday morning under the Kandra police station area. The 70-year-old activist was found dead near pole number 390/S 4 on the Kandra-Chandil up line.

Police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrived promptly at the site and began investigations. Authorities are working to contact the family of the deceased.

Role in Jharkhand Movement

Varun Chakravarty played a pivotal role in the Jharkhand movement. Leaving behind his home, he settled in Kandra to focus entirely on the cause of statehood for Jharkhand.

He had been residing in the abandoned SKG Seva Sadan. Sudhir Mahato, a senior JMM leader, visited the site and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

Locals Shocked

The Jharkhand movement, which culminated in the state’s formation in 2000, relied on leaders like Chakravarty for momentum. The police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
