Event Highlights Land Restoration and Drought Resilience Initiatives

The Institution of Engineers in Jamshedpur celebrated World Environment Day with tree planting and discussions on land restoration.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre, celebrated World Environment Day with great enthusiasm on 5 June.

B K Das, Past Chairman of the centre and former Vice President of Tata Steel Ltd’s Iron Making Division, served as the Chief Guest.

The event commenced with a tree plantation ceremony on the institution’s campus, symbolizing a commitment to a greener future.

Following the plantation, the celebration moved to the conference hall where Satish Kumar Tiwary, Chairman of the center and Chief of Mechanical Maintenance at Tata Steel Ltd, welcomed the Chief Guest and other attendees.

Tiwary emphasized the tradition of celebrating World Environment Day, aligning with the United Nations’ theme each year.

This year’s theme, "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," was highlighted by B K Das during his speech.

Das discussed the theme’s critical importance and the severe consequences of inaction.

He emphasized that land restoration is essential for enhancing biodiversity, improving soil fertility, and increasing water retention.

These efforts are crucial for mitigating the impacts of drought and desertification.

Das also addressed the importance of managing solid waste and water generation in industries, noting their significant impact on human health.

He outlined that land restoration involves activities like reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and the revival of natural water sources.

Das urged the Institution of Engineers to actively engage in land restoration, enhance drought resilience, and combat desertification as part of their contributions to this year’s World Environment Day.
