Jharkhand High Court Reviews Illegal Constructions in Jamshedpur

High Court Calls for Action on Illegal Structures in Jamshedpur, Stresses Demolition Over Sealing

The Jharkhand High Court, led by Justices Rangan Mukhopadhyay and Deepak Roshan, is intensively scrutinizing illegal constructions in Jamshedpur through PIL 2078/2018 filed by Rakesh Jha.

JAMSHEDPUR – A significant judicial review concerning illegal constructions in Jamshedpur was conducted by the High Court of Jharkhand, highlighting the need for stringent enforcement measures.

The court, presided over by Justice Rangan Mukhopadhyay and Justice Deepak Roshan, heard the ongoing public interest litigation initiated by Rakesh Jha.

During the session, the advocate representing the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) reported the sealing of 46 buildings, a measure deemed insufficient by the court which called for actual demolition of the illegal structures.

Petitioner’s lawyer, Akhilesh Srivastava, voiced concerns about potentially misleading information provided by JNAC representatives and submitted an affidavit indicating that buildings sealed as far back as 2011 were eventually unsealed by 2024 without any demolitions taking place.

The justices expressed concern upon reviewing the commission’s findings, especially the revelation of a kitchen operating in the basement of Center Point Hotel, a space previously designated for parking and commercial use.

Given the complexities and ongoing violations highlighted in the report, the court has deferred the case to April 30 for further examination and detailed review.
