In a significant step towards increasing voter participation in urban areas, Deputy Development Commissioner cum Senior Officer of the SVEEP Cell Manish Kumar chaired a crucial meeting with representatives from universities, colleges, and schools, highlighting the need for robust voter awareness campaigns within campus premises to encourage young voters to exercise their democratic rights.
JAMSHEDPUR – Manish Kumar, Development Commissioner cum Senior Officer of SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) Cell, emphasized the importance of voting as a fundamental right of every citizen during a pivotal meeting held at the Collectorate Auditorium with university deans, professors, college principals, and school administrators.
The meeting focused on outlining various strategies to promote voter awareness, with Kumar stressing that the strength of democracy lies in citizens of all age groups understanding the significance of voting and encouraging their peers, relatives, and neighbors to participate in the electoral process.
A key proposal put forth during the meeting was the creation of "Sveep icons" within university, college, and school campuses, representing students with disabilities, academic achievers, and individuals actively involved in cultural and sports activities, to spread the message of voting to every household through voter awareness programs.
The district administration’s ongoing efforts aim to combat urban apathy towards voting, seeking cooperation from all stakeholders to increase the district’s voting percentage and strengthen democracy.
Acknowledging factors such as migration, disinterest in the voting process, and lack of awareness as potential contributors to low voter turnout, the Deputy Development Commissioner emphasized the importance of collective efforts in educating individuals about the significance of participating in elections.
Various activities, including Form 6 filling, election schools, voter oath-taking, social media campaigns, environmental initiatives, and community engagements like human chains and quizzes, were discussed to engage and educate students about the electoral process.
To instill a sense of responsibility and enthusiasm among attendees, a voter oath was administered, followed by engaging activities aimed at raising awareness about voting, with the Deputy Development Commissioner urging individuals to prioritize voting before engaging in other activities on election day.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Officer-in-charge of the Sveep Cell, District Welfare Officer, District Cooperative Officer, District Sports Officer, and Sveep Cell personnel, underscoring the commitment of all stakeholders towards fostering a culture of active citizenship and strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
