Jamshedpur Schools Disagree With Automatic Promotions

AJUPEI opposes conditional promotions, citing educational integrity concerns

The Association of Jamshedpur Unaided Private Educational Institutions outlines the risks of compromising educational standards through conditional student promotions.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Association of Jamshedpur Unaided Private Educational Institutions (AJUPEI) has issued a public statement highlighting the potential drawbacks of promoting students who fail to meet academic standards.

AJUPEI’s open letter to the community emphasizes the need for maintaining educational integrity and merit-based advancements within Jamshedpur’s schools.

The statement reads: “ As Educators of the city of Jamshedpur, we write to you all with a deep sense of concern regarding the recent approaches and requests of promoting students who have not met the academic standards required for progression. As educators representing schools within the district, we feel compelled to address this issue for the betterment of our educational system and the welfare of our students. We have invested significant efforts over the past academic year, such as creating separate papers for weaker students, offering extra classes, and counselling parents and students on their future. We all follow guidelines laid down by our affiliated Councils.”

The association addresses the recent trend of requesting schools to promote students who have not achieved the required academic criteria, pointing out the adverse effects on educational quality.

The statement further added: “We believe in merit-based education founded on strong principles, but recent instances of asking schools to promote failing students undermine our credibility. While many states have repealed compulsory promotion up to std VIII, Jharkhand awaits similar measures. We recognize the complexities and challenges that students may face in their academic journey, and we are committed to providing support and resources to help them overcome these obstacles. However, promoting students without ensuring they have attained the necessary knowledge and skills not only compromises their educational development but also sets a precedent that devalues the importance of academic rigour and achievement. Moreover, it risks hindering their future success, failing in our duty to equip them for an increasingly competitive world.”

AJUPEI has detailed its efforts to support students academically, including creating specialized materials for those struggling, offering extra classes, and engaging in parent-student counseling, all in adherence to their affiliated councils’ guidelines.

Despite these support mechanisms, AJUPEI criticizes the push for promoting failing students, arguing that it undermines the schools’ credibility and the value of academic achievement.

The letter warns of the long-term consequences of lowering academic standards, such as impairing students’ future prospects in an increasingly competitive global environment.

Appealing directly to parents, AJUPEI stresses the importance of quality education for lasting success and solicits cooperation to uphold academic excellence while continuing to support students in need.

“To parents, we appeal for understanding. Quality education is vital for long-term success.

The schools are committed to providing interventions and support to students and parents while maintaining academic integrity, we would appreciate your collaboration for excellence.”

Sources said that by standing against conditional or special test-based promotions, AJUPEI aims to preserve the integrity of the education system and ensure students are genuinely prepared for future challenges.
