XLRI Professor Wins at European Business Conference

Arindam Mondal Recognized for Research on Multinational Family Firms

XLRI’s Arindam Mondal earns prestigious award at EIBA 2023 for his study on family firms’ multinational strategies.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a remarkable achievement for Indian academia, Prof. Arindam Mondal from XLRI-Xavier School of Management in Jamshedpur has been honored at the European International Business Academy (EIBA) Annual Conference 2023.

Mondal’s research, delving into the dynamics of family firms in the global market, earned him the "Best Emerging Markets Paper" award.

His paper, titled "Multinationalization of Family Firms: The Influence of Business Group Affiliation," explores the intricate relationship between family ownership, management, and multinational expansion strategies.

Through extensive empirical analysis of Indian firms, Mondal’s study reveals intriguing trends.

Family-owned firms, the research suggests, tend to limit the scale and scope of their international operations, while showing a preference for establishing subsidiaries in developed economies.

Conversely, family-managed firms are found to reduce their multinational scale and scope, typically favoring developing economies for subsidiary locations.

Mondal’s findings also highlight how family management significantly alters the impact of family ownership on a firm’s multinational dimensions.

The XLRI community and administration have expressed their pride and extended congratulations to Prof. Mondal, recognizing his contribution to the field of family business strategy, particularly in emerging markets.

His insights into how family firms navigate multinational landscapes offer valuable perspectives for academics and practitioners alike.

The 49th EIBA Annual Conference, held from December 15th to 17th, 2023, at IESG- University of Lisbon, Portugal, served as a platform for this significant recognition.

Prof. Mondal, a Fellow of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, specializes in Family Business Strategy, Emerging Market Multinationals, and Headquarter-subsidiary relationships.
