Water levels of Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers are nearing the danger mark due to continuous rain and there is a possibility of water release from the two dams.
JAMSHEDPUR – District Administration is on an alert mode due to rise in water level in both Kharkai and Subarnrekha. There is a possibility of the release of water from Bayangbil and Chandil dams too, causing further increase in water level in both the rivers.
Residents of coastal areas have been advised about potential increases in the water levels of the Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers.
The decision follows continuous rainfall in the region and plans to open the gates of the Bayangbil and Chandil Dams.
On Wednesday, the water level of the Kharkai river near Adityapur was only slightly short of the danger mark of 129.00 meters. Bayangbil Dam, which heavily influences the water levels of the Kharkai river, is also nearing the danger mark.
Arun Kerketta, the Executive Engineer of Bayankbil Dam, said that the dam’s water level stood at 303 meters on Wednesday morning, just two meters below the danger mark of 305 meters.
If authorities decide to open two gates of the Bayangbil Dam, the Kharkai river’s water level could rise by four feet.
While this remains within safe limits, the water could enter coastal areas through drains if the water level rises beyond safety mark, potentially causing flooding.
Regarding the Chandil Dam, the Executive Engineer Sanjeev Kumar informed that the dam’s water level was at a safe 178 meters on Wednesday morning. However, the level could increase if rains continue in the catchment area, and the gates’ opening may be considered.
The district administration, already on high alert due to continuous rainfall for the past four days, is taking measures to ensure safety. Municipal Corporation Administrator Girija Shankar Prasad and Gamharia CO Manoj Kumar are monitoring the situation closely.
They’ve instructed residents of the coastal areas to stay vigilant and avoid going towards the river banks.
Provisions are being made for life-saving jackets, boats, and medical kits to handle emergencies efficiently.

– Subernrekha River at Mango bridge, 118.440 m (danger level, 121.50 m)
– Kharkai River at Adityapur bridge, 128.940 m (danger level, 129.00 m)
