The court in Seraikela has convicted 10 individuals in the Tabrez Ansari mob lynching case, while two were acquitted. The sentencing will be announced on July 5.
SERAIKELA – The court of ADJ 1 Amit Shekhar in Seraikela-Kharsawan has delivered its verdict in the Tabrez Ansari mob lynching case that occurred in Dhatkidih village in 2018.
Out of the 12 accused, 10 have been convicted under multiple sections, while Sumant Pradhan and Satyanarayan Nayak were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The sentencing for the convicted individuals will be pronounced on July 5.
10 Convictions and Acquittals
Among the convicted individuals are Prakash Mandal alias Pappu Mandal, Kamal Mahato, Madan Nayak, Atul Mahali, Mahesh Mahali, Vikram Mandal, Chamu Nayak, Premchand Mahali, Sunamo Pradhan, and Bhimsen Mandal. The court has found them guilty under various sections of the law related to the case.
The Case and the FIR
Tabrez Ansari’s wife, Shahista Parveen, filed an FIR at Seraikela police station against 100 people, including Pappu Mandal.
According to the FIR, Tabrez Ansari was beaten and tied to an electric pole in Dhatkidih village while passing through on his way from Jamshedpur to Kharsawan.
The police later took him to the station and subsequently sent him to jail. On June 22, 2019, Tabrez Ansari’s health deteriorated in jail, and he was brought to Sadar Hospital for treatment, where he tragically passed away.
The court has convicted the accused under sections 304, 323, 325, 341, and 295.
Background of the Case
Tabrez Ansari was beaten by a mob on June 18, 2019, after entering a house with the intention to steal in Dhatkidih village.
He was then handed over to the police, who placed him in judicial custody.
Tragically, Tabrez Ansari’s health deteriorated in Seraikela Mandal Jail on June 22, and he was taken to Seraikela Sadar Hospital, where he passed away during treatment.
Following his death, a case was registered at Seraikela police station based on the complaint filed by Shaista Parveen, Tabrez Ansari’s wife.
A total of 13 individuals were initially arrested as accused, including one individual who has since passed away.
Viral Video and Police Action
The incident of Tabrez Ansari being beaten and subjected to religious slogans while tied to an electric pole in Dhatkidih village went viral through a video on June 18, 2019.
The police took action based on the video and registered an FIR against 13 individuals involved in the incident.
