Al Qaeda Suspect Mohammad Sami Appears in Jamshedpur Court, Sent to Ghaghidih Jail

Mohammad Sami, an alleged Al Qaeda member, was shifted from Delhi’s Tihar Jail to appear in Jamshedpur court under tight security.

JAMSHEDPUR – Under heavy security, suspected Al Qaeda member Mohammad Sami, a resident of Dhatkidih, was transported from Delhi’s Tihar Jail to Jamshedpur on Saturday.

Sami was presented in front of Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Upadhyay in the District Civil Court, Jamshedpur.

After his court appearance, Mohammad Sami was transferred to Ghaghidih Central Jail.

Journey from Tihar Jail to Tatanagar Station

Arriving via a police train from Tihar Jail, Mohammad Sami reached Tatanagar station on Saturday morning.

He was then taken to Ghaghidih Jail.

Under stringent security measures in Ghaghidih Jail’s prisoner vehicle, Mohammad Sami was transported to the court.

Court Orders for Abdul Rahman Katki

In the same case, the court has also ordered Abdul Rahman Katki, a resident of Cuttack, Odisha, to present himself physically.

Katki is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.

Both cases are being pursued separately.

Case Background

Mohammad Sami, resident of Dhatkidih, was apprehended by the Special Cell of Delhi Police from Mewat, Haryana, on January 18, 2016.

He is accused of being an Al Qaeda member and allegedly received terrorist training in Pakistan.

Following the arrest of Abdul Rahman Katki in Odisha, Delhi Police came across information about Mohammad Sami.

Based on Sami’s interrogation, local police arrested Naseem Akhtar, a resident of Azadnagar, and Mohammad Masood, a resident of Dhatkidih.

Conviction by Delhi Court

On February 14, 2023, Justice Sanjay Khanagwal of Patiala House in Delhi pronounced four accused, including Abdul Rahman Katki and Mohammad Sami, guilty.

They were sentenced to seven and a half years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 each under two separate sections 18 UAPA and 18B UAPA.
