Demolition drive in Mango, dozens of roadside shops demolished

Street vendors question need to launch demolition drive amid important festivals as dozens lose their sole means of livelihood

Jamshedpur: The Mango Municipal Corporation authorities launched an anti-encroachment demolition drive against roadside vendors on Sunday and demolished several dozen roadside makeshift structures and shops.

The drive has caused a lot of anger among the vendors and they are questioning the decision to demolish so many shops causing loss of livelihood to a large number of people at a time when people are busy celebrating and preparing for festivals like Chaitra Navratra, Chaiti Chhath and Ramnavami..

Acting on orders from the district administration, the Mango Municipal Corporation administration launched a drive against street vendors, which caused a lot of disquiet among the vendors in Mango, Jamshedpur, on Sunday.

Many shop owners lost their sole means of livelihood due to the demolition drive launched by the corporation administration, which sparked a fierce protest from the nearby sidewalk business owners.

The protesting store owners expressed their indignation at the corporation administration’s ruthless action, and they later created a front to air their protest.

Information about the drive and the dissatisfaction among vendors has been conveyed to the Dhalbhum Sub-Divisional Officer, and the situation is still tight (SDO).

The drive has sparked a discussion among locals about the need to launch it amid festivals and at a time when the Ramnavami festival is at hand.

The local street vendors want a thorough clarification from the district administration about the need to launch such a drive in the midst of festivals since municipal officials have not yet offered any convincing explanation.
