Jamshedpur: In keeping with its commitment to empower young women, Tata Steel successfully organised the 4th edition of its pioneering scholarship programme ‘Women Of Mettle’ with the first-ever virtual finale held today. Every year, this competition is conducted with much fanfare and female engineering students from premier institutes across the country look forward to participating and giving a head start to their career.

Suresh Dutt Tripathi, VP Human Resource Management, Tata Steel, said: “Tata Steel has proven to be a perfect launchpad for many women leaders in the organisation. With our pioneering Women Of Mettle scholarship programme, we aim to attract more female talent from across the country to join the manufacturing sector by providing them with an opportunity to get industry exposure, develop their skills & perspectives, and shape their careers.

We are extremely proud of the status this programme has achieved amongst young and aspiring students. This year, we are overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of the participants and have witnessed some unique presentations from the shortlisted teams. The programme, now in its fourth year, is poised to achieve more success in the future and contribute to an equitable and inclusive tomorrow.”

This year, in view of the pandemic situation, the competition was re-designed to leverage the virtual platforms. The programme received record registrations from 600 plus second year female engineering students from over 50 premier engineering institutes across India, including the IITs, NITs and the likes.

The programme is aimed at encouraging gender diversity and inclusion in the manufacturing sector. It was launched in 2017 to identify, groom, and encourage specifically the female engineering talent in India’s manufacturing sector. The applicants go through a rigorous selection process that involves technical challenges at various stages. The shortlisted students get to work on a live technical challenge and present the solution live to the select jury. The top 10 candidates not only get the opportunity to become the recipient of a scholarship but also receive an opportunity to make a career at Tata Steel. The competition culminates with the ten shortlisted candidates present their final solutions at the grand finale. The jury choose the winners basis the presentations and the solutions put forth.

The 4th edition winners received scholarships worth Rs 20 lakh along with goodies.
