CHAIBASA – The Chakradharpur railway division has dismissed an employee accused of raping a woman passenger. The accused, Kapileshwar Singh, worked at Rourkela railway station.
Officials said the dismissal was carried out under service conditions that deny him pension benefits. Senior DCM Aditya Chaudhary confirmed the action against the accused.
According to Chaudhary, extremely serious allegations were made against the railway employee. The Government Railway Police had already arrested him following the complaint.
The railway administration has separately taken strict departmental action against the accused. Officials said this was in addition to the police case already registered.
Necessary evidence and documents related to the accused are being shared with investigating agencies. Officials said this was meant to avoid any obstruction to the investigation and judicial process.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 3 at Rourkela railway station premises. Officials said the woman was allegedly a passenger travelling through the station that day.
The accused allegedly lured the woman with a promise of a confirmed train ticket. He then reportedly took her to his office premises, where the assault took place.
The case raised serious concerns about the safety of women passengers at railway stations. Officials acknowledged that public and sensitive locations like stations require stronger safeguards.
Railway officials said the dismissal action sends a strong message in such cases. Chaudhary added that necessary security and administrative steps are also being taken.
He said these measures aim to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in the future. Officials said passenger safety remains a priority for the railway division.
The action indicates that the department will not show leniency toward employees accused in cases involving women’s safety. Officials reiterated that strict measures would continue against such misconduct.
Meanwhile, railway stations across the Chaibasa division have witnessed heightened security checks in recent months. Besides Rourkela, several stations in the region have stepped up patrolling for passenger safety.
Chakradharpur division officials have periodically reviewed staff conduct following passenger complaints. Similarly, GRP teams across the zone have intensified vigilance at major junctions.
In addition, the case has renewed attention on complaint mechanisms available to women travellers. On the other hand, railway unions have called for clearer guidelines on staff conduct toward passengers.
