Convicted Bank Manager Surrenders in Dowry Harassment Case

Bank Manager jailed after losing appeal against acquittal in Jamshedpur court

Former Central Bank of India official begins one-year sentence for mistreating wife.

JAMSHEDPUR – A Kumar, a branch manager of Central Bank of India in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, surrendered before the First Class Judicial Magistrate Jitendar Ram’s court in Jamshedpur.

Kumar was immediately taken into custody and sent to jail following his surrender.

The case stems from a complaint filed by his wife, P Kumari, a resident of Mango Dimna Chowk.

Kumari had accused Kumar of dowry harassment and physical abuse after their marriage in 2016.

"My client was driven out of her marital home for not bringing additional dowry," stated Tribhuvan Yadav, Kumari’s lawyer.

Initially acquitted by a lower court on June 23, 2023, Kumar faced renewed legal trouble when Kumari filed a criminal appeal.

ADJ-4 Anandmani Tripathi overturned the acquittal on April 29, 2024, finding Kumar guilty.

The court sentenced Kumar to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.

Kumar attempted to challenge the conviction in the High Court but was directed to surrender first.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of dowry-related crimes and the legal system’s efforts to address them.

Kumar’s conviction sends a strong message about the consequences of dowry harassment.

The judgment also underscores the importance of the appeals process in ensuring justice.

Advocates expressed hope that this case will encourage more victims of dowry harassment to seek legal recourse.
