DHANBAD – Panic gripped the Tundi police station area on Thursday after a young man climbed a mobile tower, saying he was distressed over what he called a corrupt system.

A large crowd gathered at the spot after word spread that the youth had climbed the tower. He told police present at the scene that he wanted to speak either with the chief minister or with MLA Jairam Mahto, refusing to come down otherwise.

However, the high-voltage drama continued for several hours before authorities were able to arrange a conversation between the youth and Mahto. He climbed down on his own soon after speaking with the MLA.

According to details available, the youth has been identified as 24-year-old Zahid Ansari, a resident of Kazi Tola in Badalpur under Lachhurai Dih panchayat in the Tundi police station area. He climbed the tower around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Meanwhile, news of the youth being on the tower caused a sensation in the area, drawing a large number of residents to the spot. He was reportedly distressed over a corrupt system and personal difficulties, and made clear to police that he wanted to speak with either the chief minister or Jairam Mahto.

In addition, concern grew among police and local residents as the youth remained on the tower. After prolonged efforts to persuade him, authorities eventually arranged for him to speak with Mahto. Following the conversation, Ansari climbed down from the tower on his own.

Moreover, after coming down, the youth spoke to the media about his distress and helplessness. The exact nature of his grievances, and what specifically prompted the drastic step, is expected to become clearer once his full statement is recorded, according to police.

The incident comes amid a broader standoff involving Mahto, whose refusal to apologise to the Jharkhand Police Association has kept him in the news in recent days, with the association having issued a five-day ultimatum over the matter.
