DHANBAD – Two sisters from Dhanbad, Anya Mittal and Pranjal Mittal, have entered the Guinness World Records for reciting the 15th chapter of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in five minutes. Their recitation was continuous and free of any pause.
The achievement has brought recognition to Dhanbad as well as Jharkhand. Anya, an eighth-grade student at Coal Nagar DAV School, said she drew inspiration from watching her mother study the Gita.
Her mother, Preeti Agarwal, has studied the scripture regularly for years. Anya said an atmosphere of Gita recitation and discourse has existed at home for the past six years.
She began practicing regularly after being inspired by that environment. Anya completed the 15th chapter recitation in five minutes with correct pronunciation and clarity of words.
She said she hopes to clear the UPSC examination in the future and serve the country. Preeti Agarwal said the record attempt was organised through a campaign by the Chinmaya Mission and Gita Parivar.
Thousands of people took part in the wider campaign, according to Agarwal. Of these, 8,270 participants completed their Gita recitation within the stipulated time to contribute toward the record.
Guinness World Records has since sent an official gold medal and certificate to the family. However, the exact global scale of the joint recitation event was not detailed further by organisers.
Meanwhile, the sisters’ achievement has been credited to years of practice and discipline. In addition, similar Gita-related recognitions have surfaced from the region in the past, including a Hindi chaupai rendition that earned a national honour for another individual.
