JAMSHEDPUR – A wild elephant damaged crops in Chakulia’s Saradiha Panchayat, forcing frightened villagers to remain awake overnight.
A wild elephant created panic in Chakulia block on Thursday night. The incident occurred in Sanpdhara village near the West Bengal border.
Meanwhile, villagers remained alert throughout the night fearing attacks. The elephant entered farmer Gosai Hembrom’s plantation and damaged several trees.
The elephant broke jackfruit trees and consumed ripe fruits. Moreover, several banana plants were uprooted during the destruction.
Gosai Hembrom suffered major agricultural losses after the incident. However, no human injury was reported during the elephant movement.
After damaging crops, the elephant returned to a nearby forest area. Villagers continued monitoring the forest edge throughout Friday morning.
Meanwhile, forest-linked villages in the region frequently face elephant threats. Saradiha Panchayat remains among the worst affected zones in the Jamshedpur region.
Wild elephants regularly move between Jharkhand and West Bengal through this corridor. In contrast, residents said crop destruction incidents increase during seasonal forest movements.
Local villagers demanded stronger monitoring from forest authorities. Moreover, residents requested compensation for damaged agricultural produce.
