Filmmaker Promotes Upcoming Movie ‘Assi’ with Nationwide Tour

JAMSHEDPUR – Renowned Bollywood director Anubhav Sinha visited Jamshedpur on Friday to promote his upcoming courtroom drama ‘Assi’ and connect with audiences ahead of the film’s February 20 release.
Sinha, known for films like ‘Tum Bin’, ‘Ra.One’, ‘Mulk’, and ‘Thappad’, is currently on an all-India tour. He is visiting cities and small towns nationwide. The director aims to understand audience preferences better.
During his media interaction, Sinha discussed the growing OTT platform phenomenon. He compared streaming content to “packed food” served directly. However, he emphasized the theatrical experience remains unmatched. “Imagine sitting in a dark room,” he said. “A story unfolds on a big screen. The adventure is totally different. Real Indian cinema lives in theatres.”
Moreover, Sinha expressed admiration for Jamshedpur. This was his first visit to the steel city. He praised its cleanliness and greenery. “The city looks well organized,” he remarked. “I am happy to be here.” The director acknowledged Jamshedpur’s contribution to cinema. He mentioned stars like Imtiaz Ali and R Madhavan hail from here.
In addition, Sinha shared his unexpected journey into filmmaking. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Aligarh Muslim University. He never initially planned a cinema career. However, his passion for storytelling led him here. “Destiny brought me to filmmaking,” he explained.
Furthermore, the director discussed his creative process. For him, every film begins with the story. He co-wrote ‘Assi’ alongside directing it. “The story is inspired by everyday news,” he said. “These are realities we often ignore.” The courtroom drama format suited the narrative perfectly. Taapsee Pannu was the natural choice for the lead role. “She has delivered her best,” Sinha added.
The film features an ensemble cast. Besides Taapsee, it stars Kani Kusruti and Revathy. Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub play key roles. On the other hand, the film includes special appearances too. Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa have cameos.
T-Series presents ‘Assi’ as a Benaras Mediaworks Production. Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar back the project. Anubhav Sinha also serves as producer. Gulshan Kumar’s banner supports the venture.
Meanwhile, Sinha revealed his aspirations for future projects. He expressed desire to work with Amitabh Bachchan. However, he awaits the right script. “The story must match Big B’s aura,” he stated.
