Tata Steel Open to Re-including 86 Settlements in Lease

Company Officials Address Lease Renewal and Expansion Plans at New Year Event

Key Points:

  • No objection to including 86 settlements in lease renewal agreement
  • Jamshedpur plant expansion ruled out due to space limitations
  • EasyMelt technology to reduce coal consumption by 30 percent

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel Corporate Services Vice President DB Sundararaman said the company has no objection if the state government wants to include 86 settlements in the lease renewal agreement.

Sundararaman addressed reporters at the Centre of Excellence New Year cake ceremony on Thursday. He spoke alongside Global MD and CEO TV Narendran. The announcement came during the annual celebration.

He said the company will continue providing services. However, if the government wants to include the settlements, there’s no objection. The 86 settlements went out of lease in 2005.

He stated that the lease period ended on December 31. However, the lease renewal proposal has likely reached the state government. The commissioner’s appointment remains pending.

He added that an examination will follow the appointment. The government will then make a decision. He noted that deemed lease never expires unless government issues notification.

Regarding the Incab Company’s land, Sundararaman responded to a question. He said the company holds lease for 177 acres. NCLAT awarded the company to Vedanta.

However, he added that lease renewal will determine outcomes. The company will examine the situation at that time. The decision remains pending for now.

MD TV Narendran said 2025 proved excellent for India. He stated that India represents the world’s largest economy. The country also shows the fastest growth rate.

He said steel consumption is rising rapidly in India. The central government focuses on infrastructure development. Roads, rail networks, and ports receive primary attention.

Narendran welcomed the carbon tax decision. He stated that companies must reduce carbon production. India set 2070 as net zero target. Other countries chose 2050 as their deadline.

He also welcomed the safeguard duty extension. The duty was imposed for two years initially. It expired in September or November. The government extended it subsequently.

On expansion plans, he addressed the question directly. He said Tata Steel Jamshedpur plant operates on leased land. The facility covers 1,100 acres.

He stated that production reaches 11 million tons currently. No further expansion will occur at this location. However, other company facilities are undergoing expansion.

Narendran discussed steel pricing challenges extensively. He said prices remained very low for five years. Indian prices stayed Rs 3,000 per ton below international rates.

He stated that China exports at very cheap rates. The country shipped 100-110 metric tons over two years. India’s total steel production stands at 150 metric tons.

He added that challenges emerged in Arab regions. Europe and South Asia also faced difficulties. China offers the lowest freight rates for steel.

He explained that China’s infrastructure is well-developed. Meanwhile, India’s infrastructure is developing rapidly now. This creates competitive disadvantages in freight costs.

Narendran discussed the EasyMelt technology in blast furnaces. He said the company works with SMS. The technology will reduce coal consumption significantly.

He stated that implementation could cut consumption by 30 percent. Moreover, E-blast furnace will be ready for relining. This will occur by 2028-29.

The new year ceremony marked strategic discussions. Officials outlined future plans and challenges. The event highlighted company priorities for the coming year.
