Health Department Conducts Awareness Rally Against Gender Selection

Authorities in Palamu emphasize the strict implementation of the PCPNDT Act to curb gender selection techniques, launching an awareness rally from the district headquarters.

Key Points:

  • DC Shashi Ranjan led an awareness rally on PCPNDT Act.
  • The act prohibits prenatal sex determination to prevent female feticide.
  • Health officials urged the public to support gender equality.

MEDININAGAR – A major awareness rally was launched on Wednesday in Palamu district to enforce the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, aiming to curb gender selection techniques. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shashi Ranjan flagged off the rally from the district headquarters.

Awareness Drive on Gender Equality

The rally, organized by the Health Department, aimed to educate people about the legal provisions of the PCPNDT Act. DC Ranjan emphasized that the act plays a crucial role in preventing female feticide and maintaining gender balance in society. He stressed that raising awareness in both urban and rural areas is essential for its effective implementation.

Legal Implications of PCPNDT Act

Enacted in 1994, the PCPNDT Act strictly prohibits any form of sex determination before birth. Violations of this law attract severe penalties. DC Ranjan explained that prenatal gender selection contributes to declining female birth rates, making legal enforcement and public awareness critical.

Public Participation and Official Statements

Health officials, including District Tuberculosis Officer Dr. Anil Srivastava and District Program Manager Pradeep Kumar Sinha, participated in the event. The rally passed through key areas, including Shaheed Chowk and Bhagatsingh Chowk, before culminating at Medinirai Medical College Hospital. Officials engaged with the public, urging them to report any violations of the act.

Strengthening Law Enforcement

DC Ranjan suggested intensifying awareness campaigns and increasing legal actions against offenders. He emphasized that community participation is vital in ensuring compliance with the act and preventing gender discrimination.

Health Officials Call for Collective Efforts

Several health workers, including ANMs, joined the rally, advocating for collective responsibility in eliminating gender-based abortions. The health department is set to conduct more awareness programs to spread information on the adverse effects of gender selection.

The Road Ahead for Gender Balance

Authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing the PCPNDT Act effectively and promoting gender equality. They called upon community leaders, medical professionals, and citizens to contribute to the cause.

Appeal to the Public

The rally concluded with a message urging people to support legal measures against gender bias. Officials encouraged reporting of any illegal sex determination practices to strengthen law enforcement.
