H-Blast Furnace in Jamshedpur Crosses 50 Million Tonnes Without Repairs

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel’s H-Blast Furnace has set a national record by surpassing 50 million tonnes of hot metal production. It is the first in India to achieve this milestone without requiring mid-term repairs.

The H-Blast Furnace, operational since 2008 with a 3230m³ capacity, consistently exceeds its design limits by 20% annually. Tata Steel credited this accomplishment to efficient processes, innovative strategies, and its skilled workforce. Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President – Operations, highlighted, “This milestone showcases Tata Steel’s dedication to operational excellence and sustainable practices.”

A Landmark Achievement in Steelmaking

The furnace’s performance underscores Tata Steel’s engineering and operational expertise. Surpassing 50 million tonnes without mid-term maintenance is a rare achievement globally. With an average annual production exceeding 3 million tonnes, this facility sets benchmarks in productivity and innovation.

Recognition for Excellence

Over the years, the H-Blast Furnace has won accolades for efficiency, energy-saving innovations, and safety standards. It holds the national record for coal injection levels for nine years. The World Steel Association also recognized it for exceptional process safety practices in consecutive years.

Driving Sustainability and Quality

Apart from production milestones, the furnace maintains exemplary hot metal quality, especially in controlling silicon levels. It received the President of India’s award for its energy-efficient initiatives.
