Jharkhand and Assam CMs Clash Over Tribal Welfare Decision

Assam CM plans to send a delegation after Jharkhand’s tribal study announcement.

Key Points:

  • Jharkhand to send a team to study tribal workers’ conditions in Assam.
  • Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to send delegations to Jharkhand.
  • Sarma’s response followed Jharkhand’s cabinet decision on tribal welfare.

RANCHI – A new political confrontation has emerged between Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma following a recent decision by the Jharkhand government to study the plight of tribal workers in Assam’s tea gardens.

Jharkhand’s Initiative

On November 28, the Jharkhand cabinet decided to send an all-party delegation and officials to Assam to assess the living and working conditions of tribal workers originally from Jharkhand. The study aims to propose measures for their welfare and submit a detailed report to the state government.

Assam’s Response

Reacting to the announcement, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma declared plans to send two delegations to Jharkhand for a similar study. He indicated that this decision would be finalized in the Assam cabinet meeting scheduled for December 5. “We will visit Jharkhand to observe two to three specific issues,” Sarma stated, signaling a direct counter to Jharkhand’s move.

Political Implications

This development underscores growing tensions between the two states over tribal welfare and resource utilization. It also reflects differing political priorities, with both leaders asserting their regional influence. The outcome of these delegations may shape future policies and interstate relations.
