JAMSHEDPUR – A diarrhea outbreak has gripped Shukla Sabar village in Patamda, leaving more than six people ill.
Health officials visited the village on Wednesday to investigate the cause of the illness. They identified contaminated water sources as the likely origin of the outbreak. Five patients have been hospitalized at the Patamda Community Health Center, while others are being treated at home.
The inspection team, comprising District Epidemic Specialist Dr. Asad, health worker Sushil Tiwari, and local Sahiyas, collected water samples from a pond and two handpumps in the village. Initial findings revealed that one handpump is dysfunctional, and the other provides undrinkable water. Additionally, a water tower in the area remains non-functional, forcing villagers to rely on unsafe pond water.
Dr. Asad highlighted that similar incidents occurred in Kashidih village on October 26, affecting over a dozen people. To address the current crisis, water samples have been sent to MGM Medical College for laboratory testing. The team also emphasized hygiene education, advising villagers to boil drinking water and maintain cleanliness.
Experts suspect poor water quality as a recurring issue in Patamda, often linked to outbreaks. Authorities are urged to prioritize repairing water infrastructure and providing clean water to prevent future health crises.
