India’s largest solar cell & module plant ramps up production to meet rising demand
– TP Solar Ltd. starts commercial production of 2GW solar cells at Tirunelveli facility
– Facility aims to reach full 4.3GW capacity in the coming months, boosting Tata Power’s green energy goals
– Tata Power invests ₹4300 crore in advanced technology to lead India’s renewable energy push
JAMSHEDPUR – TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), has officially commenced commercial production of solar cells at its 2GW line in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant leap in India’s solar manufacturing capabilities.
The Tirunelveli plant, the largest single-location solar cell and module facility in India, had already begun producing solar modules earlier this year.
With the start of solar cell production, Tata Power is set to enhance its capacity to supply high-quality, domestically produced solar components for large-scale projects.
Currently operating at 2GW, the facility is expected to ramp up to its full 4.3GW capacity over the next few weeks, solidifying its role in meeting India’s ambitious clean energy targets.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the milestone, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of Tata Power, stated, "The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency. We are committed to making solar power accessible to all and ensuring a bright future for India, powered by renewable energy."
The state-of-the-art facility employs TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, allowing for high-efficiency production.
Tata Power’s investment of nearly ₹4300 crore in this advanced technology underscores its commitment to innovation and self-reliance in the renewable energy sector.
The solar cells and modules produced at this facility are initially intended for Tata Power’s ongoing projects, further strengthening the company’s supply chain.
Additionally, the modules produced are part of the Government’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), and the company is optimistic that its solar cells will soon be included in the ALMM list as well.
Besides the Tirunelveli plant, Tata Power also operates a facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with a capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells.
Since its establishment in 1992, this facility has supplied a total of 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells.
As Tata Power continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, the company aims to increase its green energy share from 41% to 70% by 2030, reinforcing its position as a leader in India’s transition to sustainable energy.
