Revived Nalanda University: A Modern Beacon of Ancient Knowledge

Nalanda University, with its state-of-the-art campus in Rajgir, Bihar, revives the ancient heritage of continuous knowledge flow, blending tradition with modern sustainability.

Nalanda University’s new campus in Rajgir, Bihar, showcases India’s commitment to blending ancient educational heritage with modern sustainability practices.

Nalanda is not just a name; it is an identity, a regard. Nalanda asserts the indestructibility of knowledge, despite the incineration of books in a fire.

Nalanda means ‘न अलम् ददााति इति नाालंदा, i.e., where there is a continuous flow of knowledge and education.

The new Nalanda University campus, under the aegis of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, is located in Rajgir, Bihar.

The campus has two academic blocks with 40 classrooms and a total seating capacity of about 1900. It has two auditoriums, each with a capacity of 300 seats. There is also a hostel with a capacity of about 550 students.

An 8.3 km wall surrounds the campus, making it a ‘net zero’ green space. The campus is self-sustainable, boasting a solar plant, a domestic and drinking water purification plant, a water recycling plant for wastewater reuse, a 100-acre water body, and numerous other environmentally-friendly facilities.

The University Library: The Central Library’s six-story, stupa-shaped building. Having an outer radius of 81 meters at the base and a crowning height of 26 meters, it is probably the biggest stupa-shaped building in the world.

The residence halls and hostels, like the Viharas of Nalanda, represent a very compact unit. Their names are:

  • The Tathagat Residence Hall is for women

  • Ajatshatru Residence Hall

  • Kamal Sagar, the Central Water- Body

Like early historic settlements, a lake forms the central space of the campus. Kamal Sagar is a man-made lake with four quadrants. Kamal Sagar occupies a prominent position on the net-zero campus of Nalanda University.

Amphitheatre

Located in the heart of Kamal Sagar, the grand amphitheater can accommodate approximately 2000 spectators.

In recent years, Indian universities have started performing much better than before in global rankings. 10 years ago, there were only 9 educational institutions in India in the QS ranking. Today, their number has increased to 46.

The revival of Nalanda near its ancient ruins will introduce India’s capabilities to the world, as it will tell the world that nations with strong human values are capable of creating a better world by rejuvenating history.
