Zila Parishad Chairman Protests Removal of Vendor’s Cart in Sundarnagar

Dispute Leads To Traffic Jam On Major Roads Before Resolution With Police

20-year street vendor’s case sparks conflict between local officials and law enforcement.

JAMSHEDPUR – On Saturday, there were protests and traffic disruptions due to a disagreement between Zila Parishad Chairman Bari Murmu and Sundarnagar Police regarding a street vendor’s cart.

"We are supporting a vendor who has been here for 20 years," Murmu said during the confrontation.

The conflict revolved around Santoshi Devi, a vendor whose snack cart at Sundarnagar Chowk was taken away after a complaint was made.

A group of protesters gathered around the Chowk and the nearby police station, resulting in a one-hour traffic congestion on the main roads.

"According to a local official, the problem was resolved after having discussions with the police,"

Murmu requested that the construction materials be removed from the vendor’s spot and that her cart be reinstated.

Santoshi Devi reported threats and police action against her husband to the Zila Parishad Chairman.

The incident brings attention to the conflicts that can arise between local government and law enforcement when it comes to managing public spaces.

This dispute highlights the difficulties that long-standing street vendors in Jamshedpur are facing.

The resolution shows how local political intervention can have a significant impact on resolving community disputes.
