Yuva’s Camp Aims to Combat Gender-Based Violence
A three-day awareness camp against gender-based violence has begun at Harina Mela in Potka block, organized by Youth Unity for Voluntary Action (YUVA) and Comic Relief and CREA.
JAMSHEDPUR – The awareness camp, running until June 18, is led by girls and women from 15 panchayats in Potka block.
This initiative aims to educate the thousands of visitors to Harina Mela about the rising issues of discrimination, inequality, violence, and sexual exploitation faced by women.
During the camp, various games, quizzes, and posters were used to engage participants, with full cooperation from girls and women.
Addressing Menstrual Stigma
Project coordinator Anjana Devgam emphasized the need to remove the stigma and untouchability associated with menstruation.
She highlighted that menstruation is a natural process, yet girls and women continue to face discrimination and are deprived of opportunities and rights.
"Even today, many girls cannot go to public places and face increased violence, especially those with disabilities. Some are even subjected to extreme measures like having their uterus removed, being locked up, and denied basic necessities," said Devgam.
Empowering Girls and Women
Teen leader Gudiya Nayak spoke passionately about changing the conservative notions surrounding menstruation.
"Menstruation is not a dirty or contagious issue, nor does it make girls impure. We must change this mindset and break these harmful beliefs," Nayak urged.
The youth organization also provided free drinking water and distributed leaflets with information on preventing gender-based violence.
Positive Community Response
Visitors to the camp appreciated the awareness efforts and noted the uniqueness of this initiative at Harina Mela.
"This is the first time we are seeing such an initiative here, and it’s very impactful," remarked one attendee.
The success of the camp was made possible by the efforts of all YUVA members, girls, and women who participated and supported the event.
