Wholesale-Retail Gap in Potato Pricing Raises Questions Amid Election Season
A significant pricing gap between wholesale and retail markets for potatoes in Jamshedpur has sparked concern among local consumers.
JAMSHEDPUR – Recent fluctuations in potato prices have led to a noticeable disparity between wholesale and retail rates, causing unease among shoppers in Jamshedpur.
On Thursday, while the wholesale price of potatoes per quintal was recorded at Rs 2350, retail prices remained around Rs 30 per kilogram, showing a discrepancy of approximately seven rupees per kilogram.
Just two days earlier, the wholesale price stood at Rs 2700 per quintal, with retail rates at Rs 35 per kilogram. Despite a drop in wholesale costs, many retailers have not adjusted their prices accordingly, continuing to charge Rs 35 per kilogram.
Retailers have cited the recent elections and consequent vehicle seizures as factors driving up transportation costs, which they claim justifies the higher retail pricing.
Conversely, wholesale traders attribute the elevated prices to a potato shortage from farmers and the temporary closure of cold storage facilities.
With the cold storages reopening on Thursday, there is an expectation that prices might stabilize. However, the ongoing elections have diverted the district administration’s focus, slowing potential interventions to regulate or monitor the pricing disparity effectively.
