Tatanagar Station Vending Machine Operator Fined for Overcharging

Railway Vendor Penalized for Excess Charges on Water at Tatanagar

A water vending machine operator at Tatanagar station incurs a Rs 5,000 fine for overcharging passengers, highlighting railway authorities’ crackdown on unfair practices.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a decisive action against unfair pricing practices, a water vending machine operator at Tatanagar station’s platform number one, identified as Abhishek Singhal, was fined Rs 5,000 for overcharging passengers.

The penalty followed a surprise inspection by the station’s Additional Railway Manager (ARM), triggered by passenger complaints about being charged an additional Rs 2 for water bottles.

Upon investigation, the ARM confirmed the operator was charging Rs 10 for water, deviating from the standard Rs 8 price, including the bottle, and subsequently directed the Commerce Department to impose the fine.

This incident forms part of a broader campaign by railway authorities at Tatanagar station to combat overcharging, a four-day initiative involving helpline numbers and informational posters to assist passengers in reporting such grievances.

Despite ongoing efforts and surprise checks by railway supervisors to uphold fair pricing, challenges persist, as demonstrated by the recent overcharging case, underscoring the ongoing battle against such practices at the station.
