BJP fields local candidate Kalicharan Singh from Chatra for first time

Move comes in response to long-standing demand for a local MP from the constituency

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Kalicharan Singh as its candidate for the Chatra Lok Sabha constituency, replacing two-time MP Sunil Singh. This marks the first instance of the party fielding a local candidate from Chatra, a move that has been welcomed by BJP workers in the region.

CHATRA – Kalicharan Singh, a former Jharkhand State Vice President of the BJP, hails from Shonbigha village near Dhamnia Mod and has his residence next to the Chatra DC office.

In BJP, he has selflessly made his invaluable contribution to the party and the public,” a party source said, emphasizing Singh’s dedication to the party and the people.

The demand for a local MP candidate had emerged as the main election issue for the people of the Chatra parliamentary constituency.

Since the formation of the Chatra Lok Sabha seat, no local person has been elected as an MP, with all representatives coming from outside the area.

MPs of Chatra: A historical perspective

From 1957 to 1971, Maharani Vijaya Raje of the Ramgarh royal family was elected MP for three consecutive terms. In 1971, Dr. Shankar Dayal Singh, a litterateur from Aurangabad, Bihar, became the MP of Chatra, followed by Sukhdev Prasad Verma, a resident of Jehanabad, Bihar, in 1977.

In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sunil Kumar Singh, a resident of Patna, Bihar, was elected as the MP from the BJP on the Chatra Lok Sabha seat. The party’s decision to field a local candidate in the upcoming election is seen as a response to the long-standing demand of the people.

BJP workers elated with local candidate

The nomination of Kalicharan Singh has been met with enthusiasm by BJP workers in Chatra. “BJP workers are also very happy with a local being made the candidate,” a party insider revealed, highlighting the positive sentiment among the party cadre.
